In 2009 I purchased Dornwell Panel and Paint from Dave Hatch who founded the business in 1970. I had a small team that included my wife Esta working for the company. Our goal was simple, to provide good work and exceptional customer service.
I have a great team of people who I’ve built my business around and over the years we’ve had more great people join our team and embrace our culture.
When I started out my 2 boys Tyran and Zane were in Primary school and our youngest daughter, Maeya was still in nappies. Tyran is now in his final year of secondary school and looking to start university next year and the other 2 are well into their schooling years. Time goes by quickly when you’re in business, so it is important to make the most of what you doing now and remember to smell the roses, every now and then.
In the beginning, we had many challenges to overcome and after a slow few years, we eventually started to see the gains from the hard work we had been putting in. It got to the point where we were consistently struggling to lock up cars at the end of the day.
By late 2016 I began looking for ways to best utilize the space we were currently occupying in order to achieve a higher output of vehicles per week. I wanted to do this without having to relocate the business or increase the size of our building, which would be an extremely costly exercise to do in the current Auckland property market.
This challenge led me back to Govinda Hu from Theromflow Spraybooth Systems. He was able to design and install a new paint shop facility based on working lean with Rapid Repair technology.
During this time we also upgraded our Panel shop to a 350 sqm workshop in order to cope with structural repairs and larger damaged vehicles. The old panel shop has been transformed into a Rapid Repair Centre which consists of a semi-automatic infrared drying arc, 2 prep bays and 2 booths that have the ability to reach optimum temperature very quickly.
The final part of our renovation was re-locating our main office next door, to what was previously a showroom for a commercial glazing company. From this new location, we’ve been able to enhance the customer experience by improving the surroundings in which we work in.
